If you have been sitting around since school ended, it’s time to start conditioning yourself for the physical demands of marching band. Not only will you need to play the music, you will also need to show that you can physically handle the activity. You will be competing for a spot in the show; no one is guaranteed one at this time.

You should start by doing the following exercises at least 5 times a week (outdoors and with correct form):

30 minutes of nonstop walking

5 pushups (Your knees should NOT touch the ground.  Keep your head up and your body straight.  Go as low as possible without your face touching the ground.)

10 squats nonstop (Keep your feet flat on the ground and shoulder-width apart.  Keep your back straight.)

10 jumping jacks nonstop

If you are not used to daily physical activity, you might be sore after the first few days. Do not give up; keep going! The soreness will eventually go away, and you will see and feel improvement. Add time and reps to your workout each day. Don’t forget to DRINK WATER often, even when you are not exercising.

Your goal by the end of June is:

45 minutes of nonstop walking

10 pushups (in sets of 5, if needed)

20 squats

20 jumping jacks

Your goal by the end of July is:

1 hour of walking

25 pushups (in sets of 5, if needed)

50 squats (in sets of 25, if needed)

50 jumping jacks (in sets of 25, if needed)

In a few days, I’ll be posting some stretches you can work on.

Band Handbook

Hello, everyone.  Now that UIL is over, it’s time to start thinking about marching band for fall 2012.  Since the school opened, the band has not had a handbook of guidelines and rules that all members must adhere to.  With your input, anything you might be able to think of concerning the Maverick Band will be addressed in the handbook.

You might have questions such as:
What is expected of me as a member of the Maverick Band?
What kind of jewelry can be worn while in uniform?
How should I wear my hair in the hat?
Am I allowed to wear sunglasses at a performance?
Why can’t I wear the gauntlets on my head?
Is food allowed to be taken into the stands/bleachers?
What can I bring to football games?
What is expected of the officers and section leaders?
How should I behave at rehearsals, on the bus, in uniform, and at football games?
What is the attendance policy?
Can I use my cell phone during rehearsals?
Is chewing gum allowed at band functions?
What are the consequences for failing to adhere to the rules/guidelines?
Do I need to practice?

The handbook will have a contract that will be signed by all members of the Maverick Band.  It will state that you understand all of the rules/guidelines for participation in the Maverick Band and that you agree to adhere to them.

What would you like to see included in the Maverick Band Handbook?  Please let us know by clicking on the link below and filling out the form.  Your suggestions will be kept confidential.  Help make 2012-2013 our best year ever!  Thank you!
